Date of birth – 24 June 1985, Bellville, South Africa

Nottinghamshire First Class Debut – 12 April 2015 v Middlesex (a)

A seam bowler renowned for combining accuracy with the ability to seam and swing the ball, only Australia's 19th century paceman Charlie Turner reached 50 wickets more quickly than Philander in the history of Test cricket.

Philander achieved the feat in just seven games and had gone on to claim 121, in 29 matches, at an average of 21.95 by the time of signing-up at Trent Bridge.

Often sharing the new-ball with Dale Steyn, Philander's career-best figures of six for 44 - and match figures of ten for 102 - came in a nine wicket win over New Zealand, in Hamilton, in 2012.

He was, by then, in seventh position in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test bowling.

The South African, who signed for Nottinghamshire ahead of the 2015 season, actually enjoyed his first spell in England way back in 2004, making his List A debut playing for Devon as a teenager.

Subsequent spells with Middlesex, Somerset and most recently Kent have brought a combined tally of 33 first-class wickets in ten matches.
