Notts back on top

Nottinghamshire 469 (Fleming 92, Hussey 98*)
Gloucestershire 250 (Sidebottom 4-65)
Gloucestershire 192 (Sidebottom 4-35)

Nottinghamshire won by an innings and 27 runs

Director of Cricket Mick Newell was delighted with the result but with a totesport League match on Monday followed by a four-day game against Hampshire he says his next challenge is to find 11 fit men.

Oliver Newby was the latest name to join our list of casualties during Gloucestershire?s first innings.

But the result was set up by another big first innings score and experienced seamers Ryan Sidebottom, Greg Smith and Mark Ealham stepped up to finish off the home side on what was a fairly flat pitch.

Said Newell: ?It was a good wicket but we got the runs on the board and that allowed us to put the pressure on them.

?Losing Oliver left Ryan, Mark and Greg with a large bowling burden to shoulder, especially after we asked them to follow on.

?It may not have been a full strength attack but those who did bowl performed out of their skin and it puts us back at the top of the table.?

Our next Championship match is against Hampshire starting on Wednesday and they arrive on the back of a drubbing from reigning Champions Warwickshire.

Added Newell: "We went to Bristol after being thumped and I think everyone apart from Kent has been on the end of a good hiding this season.

?It?s still a very open competition and I?m very glad we?re top of the pile with a weekend off to recover.?

Before Hampshire arrive, Essex are due next at Trent Bridge in the totesport League on Bank Holiday Monday and we?ll be looking to break our duck.

But Newell said: ?Any thoughts of tactical reorganisation and team changes have gone out of the window because we could well be struggling to get 11 fit players on to the field.?
