Notts v Somerset (Day One) Round-Up
Charlie Shreck set the tone for a dominant Notts bowling display with a first-ball dismissal of Justin Langer as Somerset limped to 143-7 having stood at 84-6 at lunch.
A successful appeal for lbw gave Shreck his 50th LV County Championship wicket of the season but heavy bouts of rain interrupted the afternoon’s play.
Opening partner Marcus Trescothick was bowled by Andre Adams for 36 after Somerset won the toss and elected to bat in anticipation of the showers.
“Langer and Trescothick are international-class batsmen and we have given ourselves a boost by knocking them over,” said Shreck.
“Knowing the conditions and the characteristics of Trent Bridge gives us an obvious advantage and it’s important that we make use of that.
“We need to take bonus points and also stop Somerset taking bonus points and if we maintain our bowling standards and make a good start with the bat then we can achieve that.”
Darren Pattinson had Zander de Bruyn, James Hildreth and Wes Durston caught behind by Chris Read as the visitors slipped from 36-1 to 51-5.
Ian Blackwell fell lbw to Shreck before Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego shared a partnership of 46 for the seventh wicket. Kieswetter edged to Read off Adams leaving Trego and Alfonso Thomas to steer Somerset to close of play.
