Wagh hits hundred in drawn return to Edgbaston

A fluent century from Mark Wagh ensured Nottinghamshire maintained their position at the top of Division One in the LV County Championship with a draw against Warwickshire.

While the rain that washed out the first two days of the match at Edgbaston ended any prospects of victory, Wagh’s 147 on his first Championship return to his old stomping ground handed Notts 11 bonus points from a possible 12.

The 32-year-old hit 19 fours and three sixes in his 161-ball innings, while Adam Voges made 76 for his fifth consecutive first-class half-century this season as Notts made 376-6 in reply to the hosts’ first innings total of 402-9 declared.

Luke Fletcher picked up one of the two Warwickshire wickets to fall in the morning session to finish with 4-115, while Charlie Shreck bowled Jim Troughton for 73 to claim his first scalp of an injury-disrupted season.

Warwickshire declared as soon as they had reached maximum batting bonus points and removed three Notts batsmen in the early stages of their first innings, with Bilal Shafayat, Will Jefferson and Samit Patel all falling cheaply.

But Wagh was unmoved despite a lack of match-practice in the last two weeks and compiled 148 for the fourth wicket with Voges in quick time, reaching his century off only 112 balls.

Voges was caught behind after hitting 14 fours and a six, leaving Ali Brown to add 64 of his own before running himself out.

Wagh fell late in the evening session and bad light then robbed Chris Read and Mark Ealham of the opportunity to pass 400 themselves.

Nevertheless, Notts retain a seven-point lead at the top of the table over Lancashire and head to the Rose Bowl to play Hampshire on Thursday in confident mood.
