Durham Enforce Follow-On

Featured News | 11th September 2009

Nottinghamshire’s walking wounded returned to the field to contribute to a first innings total of 384 all out but have eight wickets in hand to avoid defeat on the final day.

Charlie Shreck, Mark Ealham and Chris Read all took to the field and while Shreck was left stranded with Notts 16 runs short of a final batting bonus point, his decision to put down his crutches to take guard was admirable.

With £225,000 on the line for a second-place finish, holding out for a draw will be invaluable to the Notts cause.

Read became the first and, in all probability, the only Nottinghamshire player to pass 1000 first class runs for the season with an innings best 65 and Ealham scored 49 in a 113-run ninth wicket stand with Darren Pattinson.

Durham claimed the sixth wicket which ensured their bonus point tally would take them to the title in the event of a draw but with a Notts victory still a technical possibility, the champagne has had to remain on ice.

The home side dismissed Scott Newman and Mark Wagh after enforcing the follow-on and Alex Hales (33) and Darren Pattinson (4) will resume with Notts 384 and 52-2, still 212 runs behind Durham’s first innings total.
