Off-season recruit Steven Mullaney will captain Nottinghamshire’s Second Eleven against Glamorgan this week.

Notts face the Welsh outfit in a 50-over Second Eleven Trophy match tomorrow and begin a three day Championship fixture on Wednesday.

Mullaney will bat at number four with Akhil Patel and Matthew Wood opening and Alex Hales in the number three spot.

Lancashire wicket keeper Scott Stanworth has been drafted in for the fixture and will be given a chance to impress behind the stumps.

“Steven Mullaney impressed me when he toured India in pre-season because he has a positive and energetic presence and he told me he was keen to captain the side,”
said Second Eleven Manager Wayne Noon.

“We haven’t got a second eleven wicket keeper but I wanted to get a specialist in for these fixtures rather than play an unknown trialist.

“Scott is third choice at Lancashire but he’s a player I’m aware of and he’ll be keen to put in a solid performance whilst keeping to bowlers like Andy Carter and Charlie Shreck.”

Shreck’s inclusion is indicative that the influential Cornishman is nearing a return to first team action and Noon says that his presence will have a positive impact.

“Charlie has had a long rehabilitation but he’s got a smile on his face now because he’s preparing to play in a competitive game of cricket for the first time this year,” he said.

“He’ll be with us for both matches against Glamorgan and the two matches against Yorkshire next week and that will give him and us a chance to assess where he’s at and consider when to re-introduce him to first team cricket.”

Notts begin their game against Glamorgan at Lady Bay at 11am and admission is free.
