Alex Hales and Steven Mullaney have signed contract extensions with Nottinghamshire, committing them to the club until the end of the 2013 campaign.

Both players began the 2010 season in the second eleven but successfully established themselves as key players in all three formats with a series of standout performances.

“Alex and Steven put in some fantastic performances for us last season and they have the ability to be key members of the team for a number of years,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

“They forced their way into our plans and took advantage of the opportunities they were given and I’m pleased that they were so keen to sign new deals despite having a year to run.”

Hales scored 677 runs in 12 LV= County Championship matches last season and was one of five Notts players to feature in every Friends Provident t20 fixture where he shone at the top of the order.

“Alex has been asked to bat in different positions but my plan is for him to begin next season at number three in four-day cricket with Mark Wagh opening,” said Newell.

“He can go a long way in the game and the next steps are for him to exert an influence on our results and then to push for an England Lions call.”

Mullaney joined Nottinghamshire from Lancashire last season and made 11 LV= County Championship appearances having started the season as Second Eleven captain.

“I like Steven’s character and desire and I think it’s fair to say that he has surpassed his own expectations with what he has achieved at Trent Bridge,” said Newell.

“He wants to be involved in every match we play and he is a player that will continue to work on his game and make continual improvements.”

Hales flew to Australia last week to play club cricket whilst Mullaney will remain in England until January when he too plans to find an opportunity to spend time abroad.

“I have loved every minute of my time at Notts and I don’t see myself playing anywhere else which is why I was so keen to agree an extension to my contract,” said Mullaney.

“I’ve got an LV= County Championship winners’ medal and we have shown that we are a competitive team in limited overs cricket and I’m proud to be part of the setup.”
