Background

Nottinghamshire’s quest for a semi final spot in this season’s Yorkshire Bank 40 competition continues on Tuesday evening when they face Worcestershire at Trent Bridge. The Outlaws go into the contest in pole position in group A, with 16 points already secured, having won eight out of their nine matches.

Worcestershire’s defeat to Kent on Sunday was their sixth of the campaign and they go into the match with six points to their credit.

Head to Head

Notts have hosted Worcestershire on 29 previous occasions in one-day cricket. A 1971 John Player League was held at Newark but all of the other fixtures have been staged at the county headquarters at Trent Bridge.

Thirteen of the matches have been won by the home county, whilst Worcestershire have won 14 of the Nottingham games with the 1989 and 2004 contests being rained off.

Overall, home and away, in domestic one-day competition Notts have met Worcestershire on 62 occasions, winning 27 times but losing 28 of the other matches. Six contests failed to produce a result due to bad weather, whilst the 1983 match at Hereford resulted in a tie.

Last Time

Notts Outlaws won the fixture at New Road played in May. Rain reduced the contest, initially to 25 overs per side and then, later, to 16 overs each.

Worcestershire made 132 for five with Gareth Andrew giving the innings a late boost by blasting an undefeated 62 from 34 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes.

Alex Hales, with 72, provided the main response as Notts chased down their target to win by 5 wickets, with four balls to spare.

The last two Trent Bridge meetings were both in 2009. In May of that year Notts won a Friend Provident Trophy 50-over group match by 4 wickets.

Worcs scored 209-8, with fifties from Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali. Notts reached their target in the 45th over to win by 4-wickets.

Three months later Alex Hales, batting at three, made an undefeated 150 – his maiden one-day century. His runs came from 102 balls with 13 fours and 8 sixes as Notts posted 282 for seven in their Pro40 group match.

Steven Davies replied with a century of his own as the Pears claimed a 7-wicket triumph.

Played For Both

Chris Tolley, Head Coach of Nottinghamshire’s Academy, played for Worcestershire between 1989 and 1995 before moving to Trent Bridge, where he represented Notts from 1996 to 2000.

Others to play for both counties include Bobby Chapman, Paul Pollard, Nadeem Malik (pictured), David Lucas and AJ Harris

Stats

In 1992 Notts racked up 307 for seven against Worcestershire, in a home 60-over NatWest Bank Trophy match, with Paul Johnson, Chris Broad and Derek Randall all passing fifty. Alex Hales 150 not out is the highest individual score by a Notts batsman against Worcestershire.

Graham Frost, with 5-33, has the best figures for a Notts bowler in a home one-day match v Worcs, although it came in the 1971 Newark match. The best at Trent Bridge were achieved by Kevin Evans in 1992, with four for 43.

History

There has been one hat-trick in the series of meetings, collected by Nottinghamshire’s Kevin Saxelby in the 1987 Trent Bridge clash, with Worcestershire’s current director of cricket, Steve Rhodes, amongst his victims.

Bracegirdle's Interesting Fact

Sir Garfield Sobers, one of the all-time greats, only ever scored one century in limited-overs cricket.

In August 1971, captaining Notts against Worcestershire at Elm Avenue, Newark, the West Indian scored an unbeaten 116 to lead his side to a 6-wicket victory.

Milestones

David Hussey has taken 47 List-A wickets in his career and Chris Read has scored 4977 runs in one-day matches.
