Notts Outlaws openers Alex Hales and Michael Lumb gave England solid foundations in the first NatWest T20 International against New Zealand but watched on as England's middle order came up short in what would have been a record run chase in this country.

Both players will return to Trent Bridge for Friday's Friends Life t20 match against Leicestershire Foxes after Thursday's re-match at The Oval.

Hamish Rutherford (62) and Brendan McCullum (68) had helped New Zealand set England a victory target of 202 which looked within reach after Hales and Lumb shared a fifty run partnership.

Lumb dragged one on but Luke Wright and Hales continued at pace to share a fifty of their own. Hales was caught by Franklin off Hira for 39, a knock that will do much for his confidence after a spell of poor form.

England finished six runs short of their target with Ravi Bopara (30) and Ben Stokes (9) unbeaten after cameos from Morgan (7) and Buttler (17).
