Nottinghamshire bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out of the first two NatWest Series One Day Internationals at Lord's and The Ageas Bowl.

Steven Finn is also out of the games although both players will be re-assessed ahead of the climax of the series at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

Broad has a bruised knee whilst Finn has a sore shin. Jade Dernbach has already been added to the squad in place of Tim Bresnan, whose wife is expecting a child.

“There are a couple of niggles,” said Alistair Cook, the England captain.

“It’s always the way with such a quick turnaround from a Test match, there are always a couple of niggles flying around, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

After winning both Tests in the two-match series, Cook says he is mentally prepared ahead of the limited-overs clash, and is comfortable leading the side in home conditions.

“I think we’re pretty clear in our strategy,” he said.

“We’re comfortable in our own conditions, very familiar with it and have played some good cricket.

“Over the last few years in our one day cricket in England, we’ve been on a good run, won quite a lot of series and matches, so we’re quite clear in our minds."

The England squad will include Nottinghamshire bowlers Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad, and Dernbach’s addition means the tried-and-tested formula of four seam bowlers and a spinner is likely to be used today.

With regard to New Zealand, the visiting side will be missing Trent Boult with a torn side muscle, but spinner Daniel Vettori could make his first international appearance since September.

“It’s nice to be back with the team, and to play some cricket, I hope," said Vettori.  "It’s been a while."
