Samit Patel contributed two wickets as an England Performance Programme eleven saw off Columbo Colts in Sri Lanka.

Bowling as part of an unusual all-spin attack, Patel collected figures of 2-30, ably supporting Adil Rashid, who continued his fine domestic form to pick up 4-48 from his allocation of overs and ensure that the Colts succumbed 43 short of the 223 set in the first innings.

The second of two scheduled white-ball fixtures, the first being lost to the weather, the EPP found going tough with the bat in challenging conditions. Led by Gary Ballance, the EPP captain was forced into action early following the dismissals of Jason Roy and James Vince.

Ballance’s Yorkshire teammate Alex Lees top-scored with 58, while contributions from Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Adam Lyth and Tom Westley ensured that England’s total was competitive, but shy of formidable.

The Colts’ efforts with the ball proved in vain though, as England’s spinners ran through their batsmen to leave them all out with ten overs remaining.

This specialist batting & spin section of the EPP will travel to South Africa next week to join their fast bowlers, a group who will now include Stuart Broad and James Anderson, who will continue their recovery from injury in the southern hemisphere.
