Nottinghamshire fast bowler Andy Carter will join Glamorgan on a month's loan ahead of the opening round of LV= County Championship fixtures starting on Sunday.

Carter, who has recovered from the back injury that cut short his 2014 campaign, will be available for the welsh county's red ball matches against Leicestershire, Surrey and Derbyshire.

Notts selected a four man seam bowling unit of Will Gidman, Luke Fletcher, Jake Ball and Harry Gurney for the current first-class match against Loughborough MCCU - and the club is set to welcome South Africa international Vernon Philander ahead of Sunday's LV= County Championship opener versus Middlesex.

Mick Newell is pleased that Glamorgan have offered Carter, who has taken 70 wickets at 29.71 in 24 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire, an opportunity to play first-class cricket.

"The competition for seam bowling places has been very high for the start of the season," the director of cricket said.

"Andy has missed out on selection for the first game and - with Vernon Philander available for Lord's as well - we think it's best for Andy to play some first-class cricket elsewhere in the short-term, so he's good and ready when it comes to playing for us later in the season.

"We're going to need all our seam bowlers between now and September and - with Glamorgan keen to take Andy on loan - he'll be best served playing some championship cricket and hopefully getting some wickets."

Carter, whose short-term period at Essex last season helped pave the way for a return to the Notts starting line-up, is a supporter of county cricket's loan system.

“I’m very determined to succeed at Glamorgan and it’s a move that benefits all three parties as I’m keen to play first class cricket and Nottinghamshire want me to be involved in competitive matches,” he said.

“I don’t think the loan system is used enough as there are a lot of good bowlers playing second team cricket who would benefit much more from finding a county in need of players.

“I’ve never been one to sit around and my previous loan move to Essex worked out well for me and helped me to break into the Nottinghamshire team.”
