Nottinghamshire’s second team began their season with a three-day friendly against Loughborough MCCU 2nd XI and are on top thanks largely to Luke Wood.

Asked to bat first, Notts’ opening pair of Joe New and Simon Webster made a solid start, putting on 79 for the first wicket.

They could not see out the first session however as Webster, for 37, and New, for 29, each departed before lunch to leave the score on 89-2.

Further quick wickets followed after lunch, Brett Hutton falling for 14, Sam Wood for 27 and Adam Tillcock for 16 as the score reached 146-5.

That was the last of the good news for the Loughborough 2nd XI though as Connor Marshall, Tom Moores and Luke Wood each made telling contributions to a final score of 318-7 declared.

Moores fell a run short of his half-century and Paul Franks departed for two, but an unbeaten century stand from Marshall (68*) and Wood (57*) saw the visitors to a competitive total.

The declaration left the MCCU with a tricky period through to the close, and Luke Wood followed his batting exploits with an opening burst of 3-7.

He struck in his first over, removing Lewis Bramley for two caught by keeper Tom Moores, before trapping Oliver Hayley lbw without scoring to reduce the hosts to 2-2.

In the eighth over, Wood had Karim caught by Moores for five to leave the home side 13-3.

Matthew Stiddard was joined by Robert Sehmi and the pair saw the final overs out, finishing on 14 and nine respectively, with the total at close of play 40-3.
