Nottinghamshire were left frustrated by the wet conditions which wiped out most of the final day of their LV= County Championship match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

Overnight and early morning showers wiped out the morning session but conditions improved and after an early lunch play commenced at 1.20pm with a proposed 70 overs available.

Notts immediately declared on their overnight score of 296 for four, leaving Hampshire to score a nominal 392 but the prospect of further interruptions all but ruled out any thoughts of a run chase.

Luke Wood (5-1-17-0) and Vernon Philander (4.4-1-12-0) sent down a testing opening barrage but Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams, with 10, and Liam Dawson, who made 19, advanced the score to 29 without loss when the rains returned.

All in all, it was another frustrating fourth day for Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket. “We knew the weather forecast didn’t look good for today,” he said. “When the rains came they came fairly heavy so it meant the game was drifting nowhere really.

“It could have been an interesting day. They might have fancied chasing 390 and we certainly though there was more life in this wicket and we thought Samit Patel would have come into the game strongly today.

“We’re playing nice cricket – and batting very positively – but obviously we want to start turning these strong performances into wins.”

The draw, Nottinghamshire’s third in a row this season, gave the visitors 11 points from the fixture.

On Sunday 10 May Notts play Durham at the ICG Riverside in their next LV= County Championship fixture.
