Luke Fetcher and Harry Gurney, both bowling for the first time on UK soil this pre-season, shone with the ball as Nottinghamshire enjoyed slightly the better of their friendly against Derbyshire.

Eight batsmen scored between 20 and 40 in Notts' first innings total of 270 all out at Trent Bridge, before Derbyshire replied by totalling 196-7 from their allocation with Fletcher and Gurney taking two wickets each and delivering the standout figures.

Play got underway at 10.15am with a view to each side batting for 60 overs after play on Day 1 was abandoned due to rain.

The visitors bowled first in seamer friendly conditions and Greg Smith was the first man to go for 14 having lost his off-stump to the bowling of Tony Palladino.

The score was still on 32 when Smith's opening partner, Steven Mullaney, was pouched at first slip by a juggling Wayne Madsen for 13, handing former Notts left-armer Mark Footitt his solitary wicket of the day.

Palladino finished the morning session with three victims to his name after both Alex Hales, for 21, and James Taylor, for 35, offered further catches to Derbyshire's captain in the slip cordon.

Chris Read and Will Gidman came together at 93-4 and added 49 before the Nottinghamshire skipper was lbw to Ben Cotton for 26 shortly before lunch.

Gidman continued to take his personal tally to 37 before aiming a drive at former Leicestershire man Wayne White and nicking through to the keeper.

Samit Patel scored 21 at a-run-a-ball prior to nicking Alex Hughes through to wicketkeeper Tom Poynton and Sam Wood, a day on from his 22nd birthday, scored 35 batting at number six before losing his middle-stump to Shiv Thakor, making the score 214-8.

Luke Fletcher clubbed his way to 21 before being caught on the midwicket boundary off the bowling of Scott Elstone; the former Nottinghamshire man going on to dismiss Andrew Carter, caught at mid-off, to finish with figures of 2-21.

Riki Wessels, batting at number nine, accelerated late in his innings to finish unbeaten on 32.

Fletcher then quickly got amongst the Derbyshire top-order in a seven over spell that included four maidens and a pair of return catches.

Despite losing opening partner Elstone, lbw to Jake Ball for a first ball duck, Chesney Hughes was looking well set on 26 until Fletcher's one-handed return catch high above his head. The pluck to dismiss Madsen shortly afterwards was far more straightforward.

Harry Gurney took over from Fletcher at the Pavilion End and continued the good work of his pace bowling partner with Thakor, for a single, and Wes Durston, for 33, nicking catches to the slip cordon.

Andrew Carter got in on the act from the same end after tea as Tom Poynton was the victim of a leg-side strangle for 15, reducing Derbyshire to 137-6.

But, as Nottinghamshire turned to the spin of Patel and medium-pace of Mullaney for much of the closing exchanges, Alex Hughes and Wayne White contributed a stand of 42 for the seventh wicket to arrest the Derbyshire slide.

Hughes was eventually caught at short cover, off the bowling of Patel, for 40 while White finished unbeaten on 31.
