New Zealand have recalled Wellington all-rounder Grant Elliott to their ODI squad ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

35-year-old Elliott, who played in this winter’s Georgie Pie Super Smash alongside Luke Fletcher in a Wellington Firebirds side captained by Nottinghamshire’s 2014 overseas player James Franklin, last represented his country in an ODI in November 2013.

In naming their 15-man squad, New Zealand also included former Nottinghamshire overseas player Daniel Vettori, whose spin has been on display in the KFC T20 Big Bash League this winter with Brisbane Heat.

Jimmy Neesham misses out of the shortlist, and coach Mike Hesson will look to use his squad boasting all-round talent to be as competitive as possible in the tournament.

"There were some hard decisions to make, but we're pleased with the overall 15 we've chosen," he said.

"A lot of bowlers have performed brilliantly for us over the past couple of seasons, which certainly made it difficult, but we think we have the right mix.

"Our batting unit has good depth and Grant's inclusion assures us strong cover in the middle order. He brings a lot of experience and his record in New Zealand and Australia conditions is excellent."

New Zealand have been drawn in Pool A alongside England Australia, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. They will play all their matches at home by virtue of being the tournament’s co-hosts, only leaving the country should they reach the World Cup final in Melbourne.

Full 15-man New Zealand squad: Brendon McCullum (capt), Trent Boult, Grant Elliott, Tom Latham, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Daniel Vettori, Kane Williamson, Corey Anderson, Tim Southee, Luke Ronchi (wk), Ross Taylor
