Steven Finn marked his return to the England side by taking 5-45, bowling the hosts to the brink of victory over Australia in the Third Test of the Investec Ashes at Edgbaston.

Starting their second innings bowling effort with a lead of 113, Stuart Broad pinned Chris Rogers lbw for the second time in the match, before Finn took centre-stage.

The Middlesex paceman bowled with pace and aggression to rip the heart out of the tourists’ middle-order, dismissing Steven Smith, Michael Clarke, Adam Voges, Mitchell March and Mitchell Johnson.

Darren Lehmann’s men closed the day on 168-7, despite David Warner’s defiant 77 off 62 balls; a lead of just 23 runs as they stare down the barrel of a three day defeat.

The swashbuckling approach of number eight batsman Moeen Ali had earlier powered England to a total of 283 and a commanding first innings lead; the Worcestershire all-rounder scoring 59 off 78 balls with 11 fours.

His partnership of 87 with Stuart Broad. who scored 31 batting at number nine, was match-turning after Mitchell Johnson has rocked England by dismissing Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes with vicious short balls early in the day.

Joe Root completed a half-century and moved on to 63 before he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc.
