Notts Outlaws’ chances of quarter-final qualification have been washed away by the Grace Road rain.

With no play possible against the Leicestershire Foxes, and weather also washing out the other two relevant north group fixtures in Worcester and Northampton, Notts had to be content with a fifth place finish in the table, despite winning their last three completed fixtures.

Newell was rightly frustrated by the weather, but insisted that missed opportunities earlier in the competition were to blame for his side's elimination.

“If you don’t qualify you don’t deserve to qualify,” he said. “We shouldn’t have let ourselves get into this position.

“We’ve lost too many games to teams that aren’t going to qualify. We’ve beaten everybody above us at least once, but we have lost to teams who are getting nowhere near qualifying and that’s criminal.

“Two defeats against Yorkshire, one defeat against Derbyshire and one defeat against Leicestershire. We’ve missed out on opportunities to be more consistent over the course of the group.

“People will say we’ve got the players in the squad to do better and they may well be right, but ultimately we haven’t played well enough as a group to win the games.”

Notts Outlaws will next be in action at Trent Bridge with the return of 50-over cricket for the Royal London One Day competition during July and August. Don't miss out on the next step of our summer of cricket and secure your seats now
