Well known for his all round ability, Sam Wood has found himself doing numerous different roles in his 15 Twenty20 games for the Nottinghamshire Outlaws.

Whether it be chipping in with a few overs or coming in down the order in pursuit of late runs, Wood adapts regularly to what the team needs of him.

But the 22-year-old says it isn’t just batting and bowling he intends to contribute to when he steps out on the field.

“I pride myself on keeping a high level of fielding and always go out on to the pitch aiming to be the best fielder during the 20 overs,” he said.

“Of course I would like to have a bigger role with bat or ball but I appreciate we have an extremely strong squad and one of the biggest impacts I can have is through my fielding.

“Ahead of this weekend we have Alex Hales coming back in and that is always going to be a bonus for us as he will make the squad even stronger.

“We haven’t made the start in the shortest format that we would have liked but there is still a lot of cricket to be played, starting with this weekend.”

Having played in the T20 format for the Outlaws over the past couple of years, Wood has taken to the field with numerous overseas players, including Darren Sammy and Dan Christian this term.

And Wood says he has had time to pick the brains of people that have played T20 cricket all over the world and believes it has improved his game.

“It has been a great experience for me to play with different types of players over the years, especially international stars that have been part of the Indian Premier League or the Big Bash as well as the English domestic competition,” he said.

“Speaking to them about how they see the T20 game and the tempo in which they think it should be played has been a real eye opener for me as it was a lot different to what I grew up with.

“Dan Christian has come in this year and is an extremely good cricketer which should stand him in good stead to do well here.

“Hopefully we can return to winning ways with the run of home fixtures we have following the Derbyshire game on Friday.

“Playing at home is massive for all of us as the crowd is amazing and they create an amazing buzz when they are in the ground.”
