Andy Carter has been ruled out for around four weeks with a side injury.
The 26-year-old fast bowler recently returned from a successful loan spell with Glamorgan and was named in the provisional squad for the trip to Durham.
Nottinghamshire's cricket during the next month includes LV= County Championship matches against Somerset and Sussex, as well as a succession of early NatWest T20 Blast fixtures.
Carter's three matches for Glamorgan brought 12 first-class wickets at an average of 27.08. He played in five of Notts' NatWest T20 Blast fixtures in 2014, taking nine wickets at an average of 14.33.
Director of Cricket Mick Newell admits it's a frustrating time for Carter to have picked up the injury, but he backed his battery of bowlers to perform in the absence of the Lincolnshire born right-armer.
“Andy did very well on loan at Glamorgan and we had hoped to have him in contention for Durham, as well as our first Twenty20 match on Friday.
"He'd come back in confident mood because of the way he was bowling, so it's a shame he's picked up this injury.
"We have a strong squad of bowlers; bowlers that want to play in both red and white ball cricket, and that's what allows us to cope with injuries, which are inevitable during the course of a county season."
