Nottinghamshire’s Second XI skittled hosts Northamptonshire for just 129 before going on to build a lead of almost 100 on a dominant first day of their Second XI Championship game at Stowe School.

Northants won the toss and chose to bat first, Leo Carter and Saif Zaib opening for the hosts against the bowling of Harry Gurney and Jake Ball.

The visitors got their first scalp in the 6th over, Gurney getting the edge of Zaib on eight with Tom Moores doing the rest behind the stumps.

Ball soon got in on the action too, bowling Carter for 14 before striking with consecutive balls to remove Kyle Coetzer (13) and Aaron West (0) to leave the hosts struggling on 41-4.

That soon became 64-7 after Gurney (2-37) picked up his second, dismissing Ben Duckett for one, and Will Gidman chipped in with the wickets of Graeme White (1) and Matthew Player (13).

Maurice Chambers joined Zaakir Khawja but in the 26th over, Moores claimed his 5th catch of the innings, Brett Hutton removing Khawja for six.

Hutton struck again soon after to take the ninth wicket with the score on 74, bowling David Burton for five to bring number 11 Ben Sanderson to the crease.

Sanderson (22) and Chambers (23*) saw their side past the 100 mark, sharing in a last wicket stand of 55 as they frustrated the visitors’ bowlers.

The final wicket fell on the stroke of lunch, Samit Patel trapping Sanderson LBW bringing the innings to a close on 129, Ball the pick of the bowlers with 3-19 off his 12 overs.

Nottinghamshire replied with opener’s Steven Mullaney and Greg Smith but also lost early wickets when Chambers bowled the former for seven and dismissed Will Root without scoring, the visitors slipping to 26-2.

Smith had motored along to 34 before being adjudged LBW to Sanderson and Patel also made a good start, before he edged through to Duckett off Coetzer for 26.

By tea the visitors had all but wiped out Northants’ first innings score, reaching the break on 116-4 with Sam Wood 33* and Will Gidman 11*.

In the final session of the day Wood had reached 45 when he was trapped LBW by Coetzer in the 40th over, Hutton joining Gidman.

The 150 came in the 45th over with a four from Hutton and Gidman reached his fifty off the last ball of the 53rd as the seconds started to build a comprehensive lead.

Gidman couldn’t last until close though, becoming Coetzer’s third wicket of the day as he departed for 61, Notts having moved on to 213-6.

Adam Tillcock (4*) was next to the crease and alongside Hutton (40*) the pair saw out the remaining overs, the close of play score 223-6 off 64 overs.
