Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell believes his squad can get back to winning ways when they take on Durham Jets looking to get their second win of the NatWest T20 Blast campaign.

After the Outlaws fell to their first t20 defeat of the season against Yorkshire Vikings last Friday, attention turned to the Jets who suffered their first loss at the hands of Leicestershire Foxes last night.

Newell has pinpointed where the Outlaws will need to improve and hopes his squad can bounce back with a positive result on Sunday.

“Batting wise, we didn’t get off to the start we would have liked and the Yorkshire bowlers squeezed us in those opening six overs,” he said.

“We lost Brendan and Riki early on who are two of our more explosive players so that put us on the back foot early on.

“Following on from that, we didn’t pick up the early wickets we needed so it always felt like we were chasing the game and relying on a major collapse to get us back in the game.

“However, that is the nature of t20 as you aren’t going to win 14 out of 14 in the group; you just have to focus on winning the majority.”

With Alex Hales and overseas signing Darren Sammy likely to be available for this Sunday’s match, the Outlaws line up will once again alter meaning players will take up different roles in the team.

Newell believes that it is one of the greatest strengths of his group that when players are coming and going it doesn’t affect the momentum of the team.

“With players coming and going, one of the biggest words we use is ‘adaptability’ as the roles for players change week in week out,” Newell said.

“The likes of Steven Mullaney and Samit Patel, who did brilliantly to bring us back in to the game against Yorkshire, have to perform in different circumstances depending on the match situation.

“Greg Smith has been up and down the order but has done well to adapt and play in the way that the team needs him to on the day.

“Sam Wood came in during the last game because it was a used pitch that was going to be slightly slower and did a fantastic job.

“All of those performances show that throughout the 14 games every player in the squad will have to be ready to come in and do a job if people are away on international duty or have slight injuries.”
