Nottinghamshire struggled on a rain-shortened second day of their LV= County Championship match against Somerset at Trent Bridge.

The home side closed on 195 for eight, still 117 runs adrift, after losing six wickets in the 44 overs of play that were possible.

James Taylor top-scored for Notts, making 45, before admitting that it had been tough going on a greenish wicket.

“It was pretty tricky out there, the ball was nipping about all over the place and there was a bit of swing.

“Hopefully we can get a few runs in the morning – and if Samit can kick on, you never know – then if we can get some early poles we are right back in it.”

Taylor’s stay at the crease was prolonged after he appeared to be given out on 38, taken by a leg side catch from the wicketkeeper.

“I hit the ball and was caught down the leg side and fortunately the keeper dropped it, although the umpire thought he’d caught it.”

“It was very good from the ‘keeper – he acknowledged what he’d done. I thought he’d caught it, so I was on the walk off but he was honest enough to say he’d dropped it, which was good of him.”

Overnight and early morning rain wiped out the entire morning session but conditions improved enough for play to begin at 3.25pm.

Somerset soon secured their first bowling point, thanks to their third lbw decision of the innings. Brendan Taylor had batted stoically for 93 deliveries, leaving at every opportunity before being trapped in his crease by Lewis Gregory.

Riki Wessels joined James Taylor at the crease but only made eight before nicking an away-swinger from Jim Allenby into the clutches of Marcus Trescothick at second slip.

A shower took the players off for an early tea, without the loss of any more overs.

The re-start brought about that great show of sportsmanship. A leg side delivery from Tim Groenewald appeared to be nicked by James Taylor and a sprawling dive from wicketkeeper Alex Barrow seemed to scoop up the catch.

Umpire Tim Robinson, at the bowler’s end, raised the finger as Somerset appealed loudly. A period of consultation occurred where it seemed that Barrow acknowledged that he hadn’t taken it cleanly.

A round of applause broke out for Barrow’s actions but Taylor couldn’t capitalise, bowled shortly afterwards by Groenewald for 45.

Craig Overton followed up his first day heroics with the bat, where he scored 55 from 31 deliveries, by taking the final three wickets of the day.

The big fast bowler showed remarkable athleticism to cling on to sharp caught and bowled offerings to send back both Chris Read and Luke Wood. In between, he uprooted Vernon Philander’s middle stump to walk off with figures of three for 27 to his credit.

Samit Patel survived until the close, with 35 to his name, with Nottinghamshire still five runs short of securing their first batting point.
