A maiden One-Day International century from Alex Hales helped England to victory in Abu Dhabi to level their four-match series against Pakistan at 1-1.

On the back of a six-wicket defeat just two days previous, 109 from Hales and fifties from Jason Roy and Joe Root pushed the visitors up to 283-5.

Early wickets then derailed any hopes of a successful Pakistan chase. The men in green fell 95 runs short at 188 all out to give England the victory.

Eoin Morgan called correctly for the second game in a row and decided to bat first, with Hales and Roy opting to be watchful against the early seam attack of Mohammad Irfan and Anwar Ali.

Despite a number of nervous moments in the first handful of overs, the pair - who had both struggled in the first ODI - began to unfurl their power and attacking abilities.

They went past 50 together for the fifth time in 12 innings and had put on 102 before Pakistan finally had a breakthrough, Wahab Riaz removing Roy for 54.

Joe Root, who fell for nought in the first game, joined Hales, who began to take the attack to the spinners and was soon past his previous best of 67 against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

The glory of the three figure landmark came with a swept two off debutant Iftikhar Ahmed, Hales smashing seven fours and two sixes on his way to the century.

One more six followed before Ahmed slid one past another attempted sweep and Sarfraz Ahmed removed the bails and dismissed the Outlaws opener for a career-best 109.

The tourists’ innings tailed off after Hales’ dismissal, Wahab Riaz returning the remove Root (63) and Jos Buttler (11), whilst Irfan had Morgan caught by Babar Azam for 29 as the total finished someway short of what previously looked possible.

David Willey then started the Pakistan collapse in fine style, dismissing Azam (4) and the in-form danger man Mohammad Hafeez (0) in quick succession.

Chris Woakes, who hadn’t taken a wicket in six previous ODIs, then produced a devastating spell to take 3-24 from his first six overs and reduce Pakistan to 50-5.

Adil Rashid collected the wicket his fine spell of leg-spin deserved when he fizzed one through the defences of Mohammad Rizwan for 17.

Fellow twirler Moeen Ali wasn’t quite so impressive, but also picked up a wicket when Anwar Ali holed-out to Woakes having scored 23.

Willey finished with figures of 3-25 having returned to dismiss Riaz caught behind for five.

Woakes then returned to complete a four wicket bag by dismissing Pakistan’s only half-centurion Sarfraz Ahmed caught behind for 64 - and England’s series levelling victory was secure when Reece Topley bowed Irfan for a four-ball duck.
