Nottinghamshire were left frustrated as their Specsavers County Championship match against Lancashire at Trent Bridge ended in a draw.

The visitors, who had been 198 runs behind on first innings, batted throughout the final day and had reached 304-7 when the two captains agreed to shake hands with only eleven overs remaining in the day.

Haseeb Hameed, the Red Rose’s 19-year-old opener, enhanced his blossoming reputation further, by scoring his second century of the summer before falling to Brett Hutton in the afternoon.

The right-hander scored 122 before edging behind, to set Hutton on his way to figures of two for 48. Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney also took two wickets, with Imran Tahir finishing with one for 93.

Hameed and Smith resumed at the start of the day, with Lancashire on 128 without loss, 70 runs behind. Both batsmen had already passed their fifties and had been largely untroubled on the third evening.

Broad and Tahir kicked things off for Notts and kept things very tight, conceding only seven singles in the first nine overs.

Tahir’s first delivery of the day, a viciously spitting leg spinner, beat Hameed’s lunge convincingly but failed to clip the edge.

The only wicket of the morning session belonged to Harry Gurney, who managed to snare Smith after kissing the shoulder of the bat; Steven Mullaney took the low catch at second slip.

Just before lunch Lancashire forged an overall advantage and with three deliveries remaining before the interval Hameed ran Tahir to third man for his fifteenth boundary, bringing up his second century of the season from 237 balls.

Notts took the second new ball straight after lunch and made it count with two wickets in the 86th over. Broad had Luke Procter lbw for 13 and three balls later bowled Alviro Petersen for four after the South African had elected not to play a shot.

Hutton also took two wickets in quick succession, midway through the afternoon.

Hameed’s long vigil ended when he nicked behind and then Liam Livingstone prodded tamely to Michael Lumb at mid on for two.

Lancashire’s pedestrian run rate only brought them 43 runs during the afternoon, so they entered the final session with an advantage of only 51 and they looked in serious trouble when Tahir had Karl Brown brilliantly caught at short leg by Brendan Taylor.

Jordan Clark only made 11 but he defended stubbornly for over an hour before chopping Gurney on.

Tahir whirled and wheeled his way through 45 overs of mesmerising leg spin and remained a threat throughout but Steven Croft’s battling 34 from 141 deliveries kept him and his colleagues at bay.
