With Somerset the visitors to Trent Bridge on Sunday, Mick Newell has challenged his side to replicate their most recent red ball performance, only this time getting over the line to win.

The Director of Cricket saw his side dominate the most recent fixture against Lancashire in the Supersavers County Championship, only to be denied by a stubborn rearguard from the league leaders.

“We were very good against Lancashire,” he said. “We did everything but win the game.

“We dominated for four days and were better than them in all aspects of the match, we just didn't win.

“We should take an awful lot of confidence out of that, given that it was a much improved performance over recent matches.

“From our perspective, everything should be confident about that. Our one day cricket's been good in the meantime and we've obviously played a lot better cricket in the last two weeks.”

With Stuart Broad now back with England, Luke Fletcher or Luke Wood are likely to get the nod in a three man fast bowling attack, supplemented by the spin of Imran Tahir and Samit Patel.

With Somerset lying one place and three points ahead of Nottinghamshire in the table, Newell admits the game carries particular importance in his side’s quest to climb the table.

“It becomes more important when you look at the gap that's emerging between Somerset and the top five,” he said.

“The next two games against Somerset and Hampshire, the teams that are around us, they are really important because we can push someone else into trouble and get ourselves away from it.

“Ultimately what impacts us the most is the way we are going play in the next six matches.

“Every game now has become very important. We want to get in a position where we can look behind us with some safety and try get our way as close to the top as possible.”

Newell is wary of Somerset’s youthful bowling attack, featuring the Overton twins, and an experienced batting line-up that includes a trio of run machines in Chris Rogers, Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth.

“They've got a descent bowling attack,” he said. “They played well against us at Trent Bridge last year and beat us.

“They've got some good young seamers and some good batters, but we believe we've got the players to combat them.

“They've got some experience in their batting particular, but we've got to be competitive and up for the challenge.

“If we play anywhere like how we did against Lancashire I really believe we can win this game.”
