An unbeaten century from Michael Lumb, and second innings figures of 5-52 from Brett Hutton, wasn’t enough for Nottinghamshire’s Second-XI to claim victory, as they were held to a draw by MCC Universities.

MCC Universities went into Day Three of the game at 242-7, Thomas Cullen on 89* and Matt Milnes 5* before Cullen reached his century off 111 balls prior to the declaration on 267-7, meaning Nottinghamshire were 83 runs ahead.

Greg Smith and Jake Libby opened the batting in the second innings, and posted 35 in seven overs. However, Smith was gone in the 8th, bowled by Jack Grundy for 22. Michael Lumb came in to partner Libby, but the opener was soon gone for 19, caught at slip by Hassan Azad off the bowling of Andrew Westphal, leaving Nottinghamshire 65-2.

Sam Wood joined Lumb and they found good momentum with the bat, firing Nottinghamshire to 139-2 at lunch. The partnership reached 100 runs just after the break, before Jack McIver dismissed Wood as Cullen took the catch behind.

Will Root came in to partner Lumb and added 28 runs to the total, whilst Lumb clinched his century off just 85 balls, which signaled the end of Nottinghamshire’s second innings as they also declared.

MCC Universities trailed by 292 runs and their reply didn’t get off to the best of starts as they found themselves 48-4 by Tea.

Luke Wood dismissed Azad for two as Tom Keast took the catch behind. Hutton then claimed three wickets in the space of just five overs; Cullen caught at slip by Ben Kitt for three, Harry Ellison bowled for a duck and Henry Thomson LBW for 18.

With 36 overs remaining after tea, Hutton claimed his fourth wicket of the afternoon as Joe Tetley edged his dangerous delivery into the hands of Keast for 17. Tillock then took his first wicket of the game, trapping Liam Watkinson LBW for 37 runs.

Keast then caught Captain Steve Bullen behind off the bowling of Ben Kitt for 34, and Matt Milnes was adjudged LBW as Hutton claimed his fifth victim off the innings to set up a tense finish to the match.

Nottinghamshire had just 32 balls to find the final two wickets and Jack McIlver and Jack Grundy played out the final overs to ensure the match finished in a draw. The final total was 184-8, with McIlver closing five short of his half-century, whilst Grundy added three not out. Hutton finished with figures of 5-52 off 15 overs.
