Nottinghamshire’s Seconds raced to a commanding positon on the first day of their Championship match with MCC Universities and lead by 333 runs.

Joe Barrett struck 107, and there were also useful contributions from Dominic Brown (65) and Anuj Dal (49) as the Seconds posted 353-9 declared, before the MCCU closed on 20-0.

Notts, on home soil at Lady Bay, won the toss and elected to bat first, with the pairing of Sam Wood and Barrett opening up.

They got off to a strong start and reached their 50-partnership in the tenth over – but three overs later, Wood (35) was caught at mid-off by Alex Thomson off Andrew Westphal, with the score 66-1.

Notts skipper Will Root came into the fold, the home side reaching 94 in the 23rd over, until captain Root edged Westphal to keeper Thomas Cullen and headed to the clubhouse having scored 15 off 36.

Anuj Dal, fourth in line to bat, joined Barrett at the crease and Notts attained their ton in the 25th over.

High-scoring Barrett reached his half-century (84 balls, eight fours) off the last ball of the 30th over and the Seconds went into lunch 138-2, Barrett on 57 and Dal on 22.

Their 50 partnership came in the 37th over and the side reached 150 in the 40th.

The partnership soon reached 100 in the 51st over and Dal pushed a single in the 53rd which saw the Seconds make the double-ton; but, next over, Dal was run out from mid-wicket by Robert Sehmi, out for 49, with the score 208-3.

Tom Keast came in and Barrett achieved his 100 (156 balls, 16 fours) in the 55th over, but Keast (8) did not last long and was dismissed in the 58th after he was caught at mid-on off Jack Mclver, the score 221-4.

Brown joined Barrett but the latter was out for 107 in the 65th over, caught behind by Cullen off Alex Thomson’s bowling (239-5), Connor Marshall coming to the crease.

The 250 came up in the 68th over and, at tea, the score was 261-5 – Brown on 26 and Marshall on 10.

In the final session of the day the 50 partnership was reached in the 80th over (289-5) and Dominic Brown completed his half-century (83 balls, 5 fours) in the 82nd (298-5).

Marshall brought up the 300 with a four in the 83rd but two wickets fell in the 86th; the first ball had Marshall (33) bowled by Bobby Gamble (316-6) and the fifth saw Matt Carter (2) caught at mid-off by McIver (318-7).

Alex Aldred joined Brown but, in the 89th over, the latter was caught at extra cover by Sehmi off Westphal, out for 65 and the score 326-8.

Ben Kitt came in but the first ball of the 93rd over had Aldred (16) caught and bowled by Keon Harding (344-9) and Matt Milnes joined Kitt.

Milnes pulled a boundary off the final ball of the 93rd over and Notts declared on 353-9, Kitt not out on 3 and Milnes undefeated on 4.

With nine overs left in the day, the away side’s reply came from Hassan Azad and Alex Thomson, as they closed 20-0, Azad 13 not out and Thomson on 6.
