Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket says taking on the world’s best is part of the thrill of T20, as the Outlaws welcome a Lancashire Lightning side featuring Martin Guptill and Jos Buttler.

Newell says his side have special plans in place to combat the Kiwi and England world superstars, but insists that the key to success lies largely in executing their own game plans well.

“Well obviously they are the tournament winning team with some highly skilled players in Guptill and Buttler in particular, so it’s a big challenge for us  and one we are looking forward to.

“Against Birmingham I though we did most things well and just made a few errors and mistakes, but obviously at Durham we were disappointing.

“So it is about what we do. We have been talking about trying to address that, to make sure our skill levels are high and that what we do, we do very well.

“The bowlers will have some special areas and some types of deliveries that they want to bowl. The key thing is can you bowl them?

“You set the field to bowl them, then can you deliver it? If you can then I think we will be able to control the game.

“It’s part of the thrill of T20 facing  international cricketers like Guptill and world class T20 players like Jos.

“It’s good to have them playing at Trent Bridge. We see that as a challenge and our players who aspire to get to those sort of levels can see this as a great opportunity.”

The Outlaws have lost each of their NatWest T20 Blast fixtures to date, culminating in a heavy defeat away to the Durham Jets on Wednesday.

Newell says a sunny Saturday at Trent Bridge is the perfect occasion on which to turn their form around, and says the strategy to do so will consist of a back to basics approach.

“We are hoping for another 10 000 plus crowd, it would be great to see people down here watching high quality cricket,” he said.
“I think this is a great opportunity and we have to see it as that, but we know how important it is that we get it right on the day.

“Perhaps we have over complicated a little bit, so we look to keep things very simple and make sure we do the basics very well.

“That tends to be what the good sides do. You don’t have to be too funky in T20, you just have to do the basics well.”
