Brett Hutton, one of six fast bowling options in Nottinghamshire’s 13-man squad for today’s game against Durham, has fond memories of facing the men from the northeast.

The 22-year-old recorded match figures of 10-106 in the dramatic 52-run victory over Paul Collingwood’s men at Trent Bridge last season and, if selected, he’s hoping to produce more of the same.

“I just remember us winning more than anything else,” he said. "We weren’t doing very well throughout most of the game but we managed to pull a win out of the hat somehow.

“Getting that first five-for was something I’d wanted to do and having done it, it was then brilliant to get another one in the second innings to back up my performance. Then to take the last wicket to actually secure the win was just brilliant.

“I’m really looking forward to playing and putting in another performance like last years.”

The most memorable of Hutton’s victims that day was Collingwood, partially due to the batsman’s international pedigree, but mostly because it was the moment Chris Read moved to 1,000 career dismissals.

“I just sort of remember bowling a decent ball to Collingwood and it went nicely through to Ready off the edge and all of a sudden everybody went wild, then the big screen flashed up congratulating him.

“He’s been around forever and been one of the top keepers for a long time, so I was proud that I was involved.

“I was aware that he was close and there was some chat before the game about it but, because I was sort of mid-spell, there were a few things going through my mind to do with my bowling.”

Hutton & Read will not be able to repeat their double act this weekend, as the Captain misses out with a hand injury.

Jake Ball has been released by England to play, increasing competition for places in the Nottinghamshire bowling line-up.

The Welbeck Wizard’s international call-ups provide inspiration to his fellow fast bowlers, none more so than Hutton, although future world stage ambitions remain very much at the back, rather than the forefront, of his mind.

“Not necessarily this season but hopefully down the line,” he says.

“If it happens, it happens but the main thing, my main focus, is to keep putting performances in for Notts and to keep improving myself as a cricketer.

“I’ll just go from there, if I get selected for anything higher, honours-wise, it’ll be happy days.”
