After five Sunday starts this season, the match against Durham begins on Saturday morning, 28 May 2016, starting at 11am.

Notts will be hoping to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats against Warwickshire and Hampshire against a Durham side who travel to Trent Bridge on the back of beating Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Head To Head

Nottinghamshire have faced Durham on 32 occasions in first class cricket, although the 2008 clash in the north east was washed away without a ball being bowled.

Of the other fixtures Notts have won ten and lost 12 of the matches, with another nine being drawn.

There have been 16 previous meetings at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire have won five of them (1994, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2015), Durham have won four (1998, 2009, 2012 and 2013) and there have been seven draws (1992, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2014).

Last Time

Nottinghamshire won last season’s meeting at Trent Bridge, although the match will be remembered for a significant milestone as much as the eventual outcome. The match began at Trent Bridge on 9 September 2015 and was all over in three days, with Notts winning by 52 runs.

Durham had bossed most of the first two days, establishing a healthy first innings advantage after bowling Notts out for 204 with Graham Onions taking five for 56 on his 33rd birthday.

Luke Wood made 65 not out and Steven Mullaney scored 63, but there wasn’t much else by way of support.

An unbeaten 96 from Michael Richardson helped power Durham to 372, with half centuries also coming from Mark Stoneman and Scott Borthwick. Brett Hutton’s five for 77 were easily the best figures of his career – to that point.

Notts entered the third day on 138 for four, still needing 30 runs to make their guests bat again. A dramatic about-turn then took place.

Samit Patel and Riki Wessels gave the hosts a life-line with a fifth wicket stand of 153, before Wessels fell just before lunch for 85.

Ryan Pringle chipped away at the Nottinghamshire middle order, on his way to figures of three for 93 but Patel held firm, reaching his second century of the summer from 154 balls, having hit 12 fours and a six.

His enthusiastic celebrations were understandable but short-lived as he proceeded to help Rushworth’s next delivery into the hands of Onions at long leg.

Brett Hutton and Wood, who followed his unbeaten first innings score of 65, with another 35, added a valuable 53 for the eighth wicket to stretch the lead beyond 200, eventually setting Durham 215 to win.

They appeared well set at 57 for one before losing four wickets within the space of just 5.4 overs. One of those to depart was Paul Collingwood, who nicked Hutton through to Chris Read to herald scenes of great jubilation, both on and off the field, as the 37-year old glove man became the first wicketkeeper since Jack Russell in 1997 to reach the landmark of 1,000 first class dismissals.

Hutton was the main thorn in the side of the batsmen, completing his second five-wicket haul within the space of 24 hours, in taking five for 29.

Jack Burnham had been bowled for a golden duck in the opening over of the chase, shouldering arms to Jake Ball.

Harry Gurney removed Scott Borthwick and Michael Stoneman in his opening over to arrest Durham’s charge towards the finishing line and Hutton backed him up with the wickets of Michael Richardson, Collingwood and Pringle.

Ball returned to the attack to remove Jamie Harrison and Gordon Muchall, sufficient wounds for the umpires to accede to Read’s request for an extra half hour.

Hutton quickly polished things off, with the scalps of Rushworh and Onions, to finish with match figures of 10 for 106.

The victory was Nottinghamshire’s fourth in a row, the first time they had achieved that since 2010. Conversely, this was the seventh match that Durham had gone without a Championship win, six of those games having finished in a defeat.

History

In 1992 Durham entered the County Championship and played their first match at Trent Bridge in July of that year.

The match ended in a draw after Notts began with 431 for six, with Tim Robinson scoring an undefeated 164 and Chris Lewis adding 107. Ian Botham took three for 104 for the visitors, who were bowled out for just 147 but in a rain-affected contest they fared much better after being asked to follow-on and were 265 for three at stumps, with captain Dean Jones unbeaten on 154, having scored his county’s first hundred at Trent Bridge.

Teams for that first meeting:

Notts: Crawley, Pollard, Robinson, Johnson, Randall, Lewis, Cairns, Evans, French, Field-Buss, Pennett

Durham: Larkins, Parker, Jones, Briers, Botham, Henderson, Glendenen, Scott, Hughes, McEwan, Brown

In the 2012 Trent Bridge fixture between the two sides, Durham were permitted to make an official change to their starting eleven after Graham Onions had been omitted from an England Test at Lord’s.

Onions arrived at Trent Bridge at lunch on the second day just as Notts were about to begin their first innings. Replacing the unlucky Mitch Claydon, Onions proceeded to dismantle the home side with figures of 9-67 and only had himself to blame for not getting all ten wickets as it was his direct throw that ran out the other batsman, Luke Fletcher.
