Nottinghamshire all-rounder Samit Patel has surged into the top 10 of the Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player Rankings after a productive week with the bat.

Patel followed his career-best 257 not out in the drawn Specsavers County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Bristol with 66 in the thrilling victory in the Royal London One Day Cup quarter-final against Somerset at Taunton.

He then made 122 from 123 balls to help Nottinghamshire reach the 50-over Royal London One-Day Cup Final with a semi-final win over Essex at Chelmsford in which he shared a county List A record fifth wicket stand of 159 with Steven Mullaney.

Patel contributed a third of Nottinghamshire’s runs against Essex, which earned him 25 rankings points. He had earlier taken two wickets and ended the match with a haul of 36 points.

The right-handed batsman and left-arm spinner is now sixth in the overall PCA MVP Rankings on 231 points in all formats this season, 73 behind Surrey’s former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara who is the new leader.

Patel is third in the Royal London One Day Cup PCA MVP on 132, and will have the chance to finish the season top of that competition’s rankings in the final against Surrey at Lord’s on July 1.

The 32-year-old is only 18 points behind Glamorgan all-rounder Colin Ingram, the leader, and second-placed Alastair Cook, Essex’s former England batsman, whose RLODC campaigns are over.

The PCA MVP Rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches throughout the domestic season. The formula takes into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike-rates as well as runs scored and wickets taken.

Patel’s efforts in the past week have reinforced his position at the top of the all-time PCA MVP since the system was introduced in 2007.
