Nottinghamshire First Class Debut – 2 Aug 2011 v Durham (a)
Sam Kelsall was only 18 when given his first class debut by Mick Newell in 2011. With Nottinghamshire somewhat depleted by a succession of international call-ups, the right-handed batsman was selected to play against Durham at the Emirates ICG, alongside fellow debutant Karl Turner.
Although he fell cheaply in both innings he had the satisfaction of making a few runs on his next championship outing, against Warwickshire at the end of last season.
A stylish, second innings score of 35, against the newly-crowned champions, whetted the appetite and gave a taster of what may lie ahead.
Slight of build, Sam is an athletic fieldsman and more-than-capable wicketkeeper, a role he fulfilled for Nottinghamshire’s seconds in the Second Eleven Trophy Final against Lancashire in 2011.
That summer he played in seven matches for England’s Under 19 side against their South African counterparts and he boosted his tally of ODI appearances at that level to 16 on subsequent tours to Bangladesh and Australia.
In addition to his two championship appearances Sam has played one List-A match for the county, scoring 40 in a friendly against Sri Lanka A.
