Nottinghamshire First-Class Debut – 15 September 2014 v Sussex (Trent Bridge)

Luke Wood ended last season on a high, setting a benchmark that he hopes will lead to regular first team action in 2018.

The left-arm quick bowler has endured a series of niggling injuries which have disrupted his progress since a 2014 championship debut.

He had to wait for appearances in the white ball format but was part of the successful Outlaws squad that achieved outstanding success last season.

Since breaking into the Nottinghamshire team he has shown the capacity for developing into a full-blown all-rounder and in just his fifth first-class match he scored a hundred, against Sussex. That knock, an even 100, included six maximums and came whilst batting at number nine in the order, the first county batsman to make a hundred from that position for 30 years.

Wood’s forte is his ability to swing the new ball prodigiously, a strength that has accounted for the wickets of a high number of top order left-handers.

His maiden five-wicket haul came against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner’s in 2016 but he came close to matching it, with four wickets in each innings against Northants last season. In that same match he also made identical scores of 44 in each innings, both from the nightwatchman position.

As much as his ability and enthusiasm, supporters and team-mates have also begun to love his exuberant celebrations when taking a wicket.
