Nottinghamshire First Class Debut – 14 June 2015 v Somerset (Taunton)

Matthew Carter has had to be patient over the last couple of seasons, with his opportunities at first team level being restricted to the occasional outing on a turning track.

The tall, right-arm off-spinner had an astonishing debut appearance in 2015, by taking seven of the final eight Somerset first innings wickets to fall, finishing with figures of 16-2-56-7.

These were the best figures by a spin bowler on his first appearance since Leicestershire’s Jack Walsh took seven for 46 against Northants in 1938.

Second time around, it wasn’t quite as easy for the former Lincolnshire Minor Counties’ player as Somerset chased down an improbable victory target of 401 but his analysis of 33.4-4-139-3 nevertheless meant a 10-wicket haul on debut.

Green-tinged pitches and the continued presence of Samit Patel in the first team ranks, have restricted Carter’s opportunities since then but he proved his worth when recalled for the final match of last season, taking four wickets on the final day against Sussex at Hove, after making 33 in a thrilling last wicket partnership of 73 as Notts secured promotion.

The younger brother of former county seamer Andy Carter, the Lincoln-born bowler will be hoping that Nottinghamshire’s return to Division One coincides with him receiving more first team outings.
