Mick Newell is Nottinghamshire’s Director of Cricket, a position he has held since 2002.

Following the departure of Clive Rice, Newell took the helm with Notts languishing in Division Two. An instant promotion made his temporary charge permanent, and he has held the position of Director of Cricket ever since.

As well as County Championship trophy wins in 2005 and 2010, Newell has regularly navigated Nottinghamshire to the knockout stages in both T20 and one-day cricket, a run of success that culminated in Notts Outlaws’ Yorkshire Bank 40 trophy win in 2013.

Under his tutelage the likes of Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, James Taylor, Samit Patel, Michael Lumb, Alex Hales and Jake Ball have all pushed for international selection, making the quality of his recruitment and management undeniable.

After the 2016 domestic campaign Newell handed over the responsibility of the Nottinghamshire first team to Peter Moores, leaving him free to focus on the club’s overall development and recruiting programme. He also combines those duties with those of being an England selector.

As a player, the right-handed batsman made 148 appearances for Notts, scoring more than 5,000 runs, with six centuries and a best score of 203 not out. During the county’s successful 1987 campaign he scored more than 1,000 runs as Nottinghamshire romped to the title.
