Trialist opener George Munsey carried his bat through the Nottinghamshire innings for a score of 172 on the opening day of Nottinghamshire’s Second XI fixture against Lincolnshire.

The 22-year-old Scot shared a second wicket stand of 140 with Sam Wood and guided Paul Franks’ men to a total of 374-6 declared, before the home side battled their way to 43-0 at the close.

Nottinghamshire won the toss at Sleaford, chose to bat and lost their first wicket when Anuj Dal edged to second slip in the sixth over for 14.

That brought together Munsey and Wood for what proved to be a fruitful second wicket partnership.

The hundred came up in the 22nd over and Munsey brought up his fifty – in 65 balls – with his second six of the innings.

Wood’s fifty was only slightly more pedestrian, coming in 71 balls with eight fours, and Notts had raced to 158-1 by lunch.

Only four more runs had, however, been added post interval when Wood holed-out to midwicket for 52.

However, with Munsey reaching three figures off 139 deliveries, striking 15 fours and two sixes, and fellow trialist Christian Purchase also passing 50, the visitors continued to make serene progress.

Purchase, aged 21 from Cornwall, reached the landmark in 66 balls with seven fours, but was out two balls later nicking behind off the bowling of Joe Peck.

Adam Tillcock was out for ten and Notts took tea with Brett Hutton having joined centurion Munsey at the crease and the score on 285-4.

Hutton scored 22, Jake Fish was out for five and Simon Webster unbeaten on ten as Nottinghamshire declared at 374-6 with 13 overs remaining in the day. Munsey carried his bat through the innings and finished on 172 not out.

Lincolnshire’s openers were left with a tricky period to negotiate against Hutton and Ben Kitt, but Saad Ashraf and Ross Carnelly held firm for respective unbeaten scores of 26 and 16.
