Nottinghamshire’s Seconds are on top after the first day of their friendly against Derbyshire at Notts Sports Club as the bowlers restricted the visitors to 258 all out.

Notts captain Greg Smith and Jake Libby then managed to add 51 for the first wicket before the close of play.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first, opening with Ben Slater and George Sellers, the latter falling without scoring in the second over to Will Gidman.

Greg Oldfield joined Slater with the pair added 94 for the second wicket as they recovered from the early loss of Sellers.

They had nearly reached the lunch interval but Ben Kitt had other ideas, having Slater caught for 35 before finding the edge of Oldfield on 48 with Matt Carter doing the rest, the visitors going to the break on 99-3.

Tom Knight and Harvey Hosein once again rebuilt for the visitors, putting on 70 for the fourth wicket before Matt Carter struck twice in quick succession.

Hosein hit the spinner straight to Anuj Dal at mid-wicket on 28 before Callum Parkinson was bowled without scoring.

Knight and Rob Hemmings ensured that no further wickets were lost before the tea break, the former completing his fifty as the visitors went to the interval on 201-5.

Not to be outdone by brother Matt, Andy Carter was amongst the wickets soon after tea, taking three in two overs to reduce the visitors to 218-8.

First, Tom Moores caught Hemmings behind for 12, before both Tommy Taylor and Tom Milnes were removed without scoring, caught by Moores and Luke Wood respectively.

Knight was offering stubborn resistance at the other end and looked set to complete his century in the 87th over, hitting four of the first five balls for four before being trapped LBW by Wood for 97 off the last.

Last man Will Davis joined Jonathan Steel but failed to score as he was bowled by Wood in the 89th leaving Steel unbeaten on six and the innings closing on 258, Andy Carter the pick of the bowlers as he finished with 3-21 off 15 overs.

That left Smith (23*) and Libby (24*) with 13 overs to go in the day, giving them ample time to add 51 without losing a wicket.
