Former Nottinghamshire women’s cricketer Rene Farrell has been announced as Sydney Thunder’s first signing for the upcoming WBBL.

Farrell was part of the same side as Jenny Gunn in 2009 and has an impressive record on the international scene, taking 17 wickets at 9.88 in Tests and 33 wickets at an economy of 3.91 in T20 internationals.

The 28-year-old spent almost three years away after retiring through injury in 2011 but will return to English shores this summer with the Southern Stars for the Women’s Ashes.

“It is a bit of an unknown, but it’s quite exciting at the same time,” said Farrell.

“We’ve had a lot of Ashes prep and there’s been a bit of discussion about which girls are going where and it’s exciting to see there’s a spread of the Aussie girls across all the teams.

“I’ve spoken to the General Manager Nick Cummins and I love the group of the players that we’re building the team with.

“I think we’ll have a good chance of holding up the title this year.

“Every time you go out on the field you want to win, but to win the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League and to hold the trophy up… hopefully we’ll be standing alongside the men’s team and have the double.”
