Nottinghamshire’s bowlers, led by the injured Andy Carter, took their side to a monumental 113-run win over Worcestershire on the final day of their LV= County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge.

Having been set 324 to win, it was Worcestershire who looked the most likely winners when Daryl Mitchell and Joe Clarke took the visitors to 175 for 3, midway through the afternoon session.

However, despite the absence of injured seam bowler Luke Fletcher and with Carter continuing to bowl with an abdominal strain, Notts eventually bowled out Worcestershire for 210. Their last seven wickets fell for just 35 runs with Carter returning figures of 4 for 46, including three wickets for the loss of just six runs in 3.4 overs.

There was huge disappointment amongst the Worcestershire players who had dominated the morning session thanks to captain Mitchell and Tom Fell. The second wicket pair added 112 in decent time and looked well set until Fell, who reached his 50 off 76 balls, played around a straight delivery from Brett Hutton, shortly after lunch.

Clarke followed at 175 for 3, bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus and with Alex Gidman unable to bat having been struck on the head by the former Ashes bowler in the first innings, Worcestershire were effectively four wickets down.

Having dropped anchor, Mitchell eventually posted his half-century off 105 deliveries. However, Notts bowled with great purpose against the Worcestershire skipper, and Samit Patel finally got his reward, Mitchell top edging to square leg where Carter took a simple catch.

With the bit between their teeth, Notts went all out for the kill. Ben Cox, who was fortunate to survive on a number of occasions, when chipping the ball through Read's mid wicket trap, finally perished – caught by Steven Mullaney at 201 for 5.

Carter returned to finish the job despite carrying an injury, blasting through the Worcestershire tail to secure the victory.

He removed Joe Leach, Saeed Ajmal and finally Charlie Morris, around Patel bowling Barnard for 0, and Notts completed a  memorable victory.
