Nottinghamshire’s Seconds will face a second uphill battle in as many weeks on the final day of a Second Eleven Championship match after conceding a deficit of 347 after the second day at Notts Sports Club.

Just a week on from chasing 446 in the fourth innings to beat Derbyshire, it will take a similar effort against Worcestershire as the visitors added 240-5 to their first innings 234 in reply to Nottinghamshire’s 127.

Notts started the day on 41-5 and Will Gidman and Adam Tillcock added 40 to that before the first wicket of the day fell, the latter bowled by Ed Barnard for 11.

Dominic Brown joined Gidman but he faced just two balls, trapped LBW in the same over without scoring, Notts falling to 81-7.

That became 89-9 before rain interrupted and caused an early lunch, Connor Marshall bowled by Alex Hepburn and Tom Keast dismissed by Ross Whiteley.

Seven overs had been lost in the day when play started in the second session, Simon Webster joining Gidman and the pair putting on a crucial 38 for the last wicket.

Gidman was the pick of the Nottinghamshire batsmen, ending unbeaten on a fine 57 as Barnard finished the innings by removing Webster for nine, ending with figures of 6-31.

Worcestershire began their second innings with a lead of 107 but lost an early wicket, Chris Woakes removing Alex Hepburn for one.

Alex Kervezee soon followed, trapped LBW by Webster for 25 but then the visitors’ batsmen got on with piling on the runs during the final two sessions.

First off, Oliver Westbury and George Rhodes took their side to tea on 86-2, the batsmen going to the interval on 20 and 27 respectively.

In the final session the pair had taken their partnership to 97 and the score to 134-3 before Webster had his second, having Rhodes caught behind for 48.

Westbury continued to add to the lead though and despite losing Whiteley (14) and Barnard (22), both falling to Will Root, he batted his way to a century and his side in to a dominant position by the end of the day.

By the close Worcestershire had moved on to 240-5, a lead of 347 and with Westbury unbeaten on 104.
