Notts Outlaws return to NatWest T20 Blast action on Friday evening when they travel to Headingley to face second-to-bottom Yorkshire Vikings.

Both sides are looking for the run of results that will see them through to the knock out phase of the competition. Outlaws have won three and lost three of their opening six matches and the Vikings’ record is won two and lost three, having played a game fewer.

If you’re making your way to watch the match live you may wish to arrive early and take in a potentially exciting curtain-raiser.

Yorkshire Women will take on reigning NatWest Women’s County T20 champions Nottinghamshire in a T20 match at Headingley.

The match, which will feature a host of England internationals including the Yorkshire trio of Katherine Brunt, Danielle Hazell and Lauren Winfield and Notts’ stars Jenny Gunn and Danielle Wyatt, will start at 1.00pm and will showcase the women’s game before the main event later in the day.

Head To Head

Friday’s contest will be the 24th time that the two counties have met in the domestic T20 competition, with Notts holding a winning advantage of 14-8, with one match abandoned.

This will be the 11th meeting at Headingley, where Notts have won on six previous occasions (2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014) and lost four times (2003, 2007, 2009 and 2010).

At Trent Bridge, it’s eight wins to four, in Notts’ favour, with the only abandonment coming in the only match to be staged away from the county headquarters, the 2012 fixture at Scarborough.

Last Time

Last season’s corresponding fixture at Headingley is generally regarded as being one of the finest matches ever played in the domestic T20 competition.

It took place on July 25 2014, with both sides needing a win for very different reasons. The Outlaws entered the arena in second place in the North group and were looking to claim the points to secure home advantage in the quarter finals.

Yorkshire Vikings were fourth and knew they could miss out on the knock out stages if they were beaten and Birmingham Bears won their match.

What transpired over the three and a half hours lives long in the memory of the Notts’ supporters who were there or who were watching the live television coverage.

The Outlaws ran into an in-form T20 star as Australia’s Aaron Finch blazed his way to 89 at the start of the evening, as the Vikings made 200 for five after electing to bat first.

Finch was at his explosive best and made his runs from only 46 balls, with four fours and seven sixes. Jonny Bairstow chipped in with 60 of his own, with Jake Ball’s three for 38 being the stand-out bowling figures.

On a good wicket, with a raucous full house in attendance, Notts set about the unlikely task of chasing down their second highest target of all-time.

Man of the match Alex Hales fired 67 from 40 balls to lead the reply but even with his effort a win looked unlikely with 39 needed from the last three overs.

James Taylor and James Franklin combined in the most explosive manner though, to wrap things up with four balls to spare.

Franklin hit his first two balls miles over the ropes for huge sixes, to dampen home enthusiasm but even the most ardent Notts fan couldn’t have imagined how the game would swing so dramatically.

Ryan Sidebottom began the penultimate over with 26 still needed – Taylor’s 4446 to end the over was simply sensational and left Franklin to hit another six from the second ball of the final over to seal the win.

Taylor (35 not out, 14 balls 6x4 1x6) and Franklin (19 not out, six balls 3x6) had plundered 39 from 13 deliveries to win the match in the most dramatic style imaginable.

News filtered through that Birmingham had won their match so Yorkshire missed out altogether, with Notts going forward to face Hampshire in a home quarter final.

History

Notts endured a poor opening season when our domestic T20 competition began in 2003. The Outlaws finished bottom of the North group, a position cemented with an 18-run defeat at Headingley against Yorkshire.

The home side made 196 for five, having elected to bat first.

After Charlie Shreck, on his T20 debut, had removed Yuvraj Singh – sent out to open for the Tykes – skipper Matt Wood and 23-year old Michael Lumb added 101 for the second wicket.

Wood made 57 but it was Lumb who put the Notts’ bowling to the sword by bludgeoning 55 from 26 balls, with four fours and five sixes.

In reply, Notts were very much in the contest at 140-2 but were then blown away by Lumb the bowler – sealing the man of the match award with figures of 3-32, removing Kevin Pietersen, Bilal Shafayat and Will Smith.

Tim Bresnan also claimed three wickets as Notts subsided to 178 all out in 18.1 overs.

Teams for that first meeting:

Yorkshire: Wood (capt), Yuvraj Singh, Lumb, White, Hamilton, Blakey (wk), Craven, Gray, Bresnan, Silverwood, Sidebottom

Notts: Welton, Clough, Gallian, Pietersen, Shafayat (wk), Patel, Franks (capt), Smith, Logan, MacGill, Shreck

Played For Them Both

Greg Blewett returns to our shores this summer in his new role as a member of Australia’s coaching staff. The former top order batsman, now 43, burst onto the international scene in 1995, scoring centuries in his first two Test matches, both against England. He appeared in 46 Test matches and also enjoyed several stints in county cricket.

Blewett played a handful of matches for Yorkshire in 1999 and later appeared for both Kent and Surrey but in 2001 he played 16 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire, beginning with a century on debut against Durham.

Amongst other cricketers to have represented both Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire are Blewett, Brian Bolus, Mike Bore, Mark Broadhurst, Gareth Clough, Phil Jaques, Gary Keedy, Younis Khan, Michael Lumb, Ashley Metcalfe, Ajmal Shahzad, Ryan Sidebottom, Barry Stead, Richard Stemp and Alex Wharf.
