Nottinghamshire Academy gained a valuable 17 points against Radcliffe over the weekend before suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Welbeck on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Academy were the hosts to Radcliffe on Saturday with the visitors winning the toss and choosing to field, removing Joe New for four with just 26 on the board.

Opening partner Anuj Dal and Dan Freeman weathered the early pressure though, the former bringing up his 50 in the 26th over.

Dal (58) couldn’t continue his good work after passing the milestone, caught by Joe Wilcox off James Marshall with the score on 102.

Adam Tillcock came and went for a quickfire 23 and captain Paul Franks added 11 as Freeman edged towards a first century of the season.

Freeman was eventually dismissed for 126 in the last over but his innings guided the Academy to a competitive 247-5 in their 50 overs.

Radcliffe’s reply came from opener’s Wilcox and Ben Carr and it was the last ball of the 19th over before the Academy broke through, Wilcox (24) caught by keeper Joe New off Simon Webster’s bowling (58-1), Ross Carnelley joining Carr.

The visitors were slowly accumulating a score but had only reached the halfway point on 71-1, Tillcock removing Carnelley for four, stumped by New shortly after the break.

Two quick wickets from Connor Marshall, one LBW and one caught behind, reduced the score to 91-4, Radcliffe’s chance of chasing down the Academy’s score decreasing as the overs went by.

Regular wickets fell as the bowlers shared the scalps but they had to settle for a winning draw after failing to claim the final two wickets.

Jacob Deavin-Baker (15*) and Ed Hodgson (16*) shared an unbeaten partnership of 36 to halt the Academy charge, the home side taking 17 points from the match.

On Monday, the Academy travelled to high-flying Welbeck, the hosts getting the best of a low scoring encounter.

Welbeck won the toss and had early rewards, Dal stumped without scoring which brought recent centurion Freeman to the crease with the score on 1-1.

He couldn’t repeat the heroics of Saturday thought, edging to first slip in the sixth over for just four, the score on 7-2.

Robert French (5-40) was rampant throughout the Academy innings and alongside Tom Lungley (3-32) he ensured the visitors never had the chance of setting a high total.

Franks (22) and Tim Wyatt added a ninth wicket partnership of 40 but that wasn’ enough to pass the 100 mark, the Academy all out for 94 in 35.5 overs.

Welbeck replied with opener’s Matt Higgins and Simon Widdup and tea was taken after 10 overs with the score 31-0.

After resuming Welbeck had reached 47 in the 19th over when Widdup (23) was bowled by Tim Wyatt, Andrew Parkin-Coates joining Higgins.

There were further breakthroughs for Liam Patterson-White and Marshall as the pair accounted for Higgins and Richard Stroh.

Lungley (11*) joined Parkin-Coates (17*) and the former hit the winning runs with a four in the 35th over, Welbeck winning by seven wickets.
