Brett Hutton’s maiden five-wicket haul halted Durham’s progress but Nottinghamshire still face a tough challenge if they are to get back into their LV= County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

At stumps on the second day they had reached 138 for four, still 30 runs away from making their visitors bat again.

Durham were eventually bowled out for 372 in their first innings, with Michael Richardson remaining undefeated on 96.

The day began with Durham on their overnight score of 174 for two, with Scott Borthwick and Paul Collingwood at the crease. Notts were handed an early boost as Borthwick played on from Luke Wood for 63.

Collingwood followed in similar fashion, for 40, as he deflected the ball onto his stumps as he attempted to leave a Hutton delivery alone.

Gordon Muchall was the other wicket to fall during the morning session, departing carelessly for 32. He lifted Samit Patel over Michael Lumb at mid on but then went for a repeat and hit it straight into the hands of the same fielder.

Michael Richardson was unbeaten on 49 at lunch and reached his 50 with the first delivery of the afternoon, running a four to third man – an area where 35 of his half century had come from.

The Durham ‘keeper proved to be the major obstacle for the home attack but he lost three partners in quick succession, mid-afternoon.

Hutton found the outside edge of Ryan Pringle’s bat and Riki Wessels did the rest at slip, then he bowled Jamie Harrison for nought.

Wood then swung the ball back to castle Barry McCarthy for two and Hutton saw off Rushworth for nine.

Richardson was on 92 when Graham Onions strode to the crease and although he added four more he lost the strike and had to watch on as the last man nicked through to Chris Read, giving Hutton his five-fer.

Brendan Taylor and Jake Libby put 53 on for the first wicket, when Notts batted again but two wickets in quick succession swung the momentum back towards Durham.

Taylor was bowled by Harrison for 33 and Steven Mullaney had his off stump knocked out of the ground by Onions, for 11.

Libby edged Onions to slip for 34 and the same bowler then had Lumb caught at fine leg for 14.

Samit Patel and Riki Wessels saw the county through to stumps but will need to bat well when play resumes on the third morning.
