Billy Root posted an unbeaten century and Sam Wood snared five wickets, as Nottinghamshire’s Second XI secured a thumping victory over Northamptonshire.

The left-hander raced to an unbeaten 139 off 128 balls in the visitors’ total of 332-5 from their 50 overs at Finedon Dolben.

Wood’s 5-38 then destroyed the home side’s lower order to secure a 129-run success for the Greg Smith captained Outlaws.

Smith won the toss and elected to bat before racing to 26 off 19 balls to get his side off to a flying start, before becoming the first of two quick wickets to Palash Joshi, the second of which was Wood for ten.

That brought Root to the crease and - supported by Joe Barrett (48), Anuj Dal (25), Lyndon James (27) and Dominic Brown (44 off 28 balls) - the 24-year-old struck 14 fours and a six, guiding Notts to their unassailable total.

Brown ripped out three of the Steelbacks’ top four, all lbw, before Wood’s off-spin did the rest, including the dismissal of Harry Adair for 80, as Northants were bowled out, in 44 overs, for 203.
