Dale Steyn has reclaimed his position at number one in the ICC Test Championship Bowling Rankings following his match-winning contribution in South Africa’s 204-run win over New Zealand.

The pace bowler recorded sparkling match figures of eight for 99 in Centurion to help his side to 1-0 series win, climbing ahead of Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (third) and England’s James Anderson (second) in the rankings.

The news means that the 33-year-old Steyn has gone back to number one for the first time since December 2015, when he picked up an injury to his shoulder during the Test series against England.

Steyn’s international teammates Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada also climbed the rankings, with the former jumping from 13th to 11th and the latter 30th to 27th.

South Africa’s series win has also seen them rise from seventh to fifth in the team rankings, ahead of Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Trent Bridge will host an Investec Test Match between England and South Africa, and a Royal London One-Day International visit from the West Indies, in 2017.
