The chances of seeing Stuart Broad in action for England at Trent Bridge in 2016 have been boosted by the Nottinghamshire paceman’s addition to his country’s white ball squad in South Africa.

The world’s number one bowler in the five-day format is set to make his return to the limited-overs arena, from which he was rested during the Investec Ashes summer of 2014, during the five match series against the Proteas that gets underway a week on Wednesday.

England Head Coach Trevor Bayliss always talked up the 29-year-old’s chances of returning to the one-day team, bit originally opted to retain faith with bowlers such as Steven Finn, David Willey and Reece Topley, who impressed during Broad’s absence.

Injuries to Finn and his original replacement Liam Plunkett, though, have re-opened the door as England’s preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup on home turf in 2019 continue.

Broad made two white ball appearances for the Notts Outlaws in 2015, taking 1-20 from four overs in the NatWest T20 Blast against Leicestershire and 0-40 from eight against Surrey in the semi-final of the Royal London One-Day Cup.

The Nottingham born paceman last played ODIs at the ICC Cricket World Cup in March, where he took four wickets at 63.50 with an economy rate of 5.36 runs-per-over.

He was relieved of England’s Twenty20 captaincy in the aftermath of the tournament as Andrew Strauss elected to appoint Eoin Morgan for both one-day formats.

Overall in ODI cricket, Broad has 177 wickets at an average of 29.80 and an economy-rate of 5.26. He will add valuable experience to England’s youthful bowling unit.

"I'm desperate to play white-ball cricket again for England," said Broad prior to learning of his selection.

"You have a short career and I'm not going to play until I'm 37 or 38, so I want to play as much cricket as I possibly can.

"My consistency has got better with the red ball probably through playing more exclusively red-ball cricket, but we don't know what is going to happen over the next few months with injuries or loss of form.

"Anything can happen to get a call-up, so I want to be ready to play white-ball cricket."

Broad's return to the side brings with it the possibility of two appearances at Trent Bridge in 2016, as England face Sri Lanka on Tuesday 21 June and Pakistan on Tuesday 30 August, both under floodlights.
