Nottinghamshire continue their Specsavers County Championship campaign this Sunday with a trip to Edgbaston to face mid-table Warwickshire.

After the disappointment of defeat against Surrey in midweek, Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell is keen to see more consistency from his side’s batsmen.

“We have to be better when conditions don’t suit us,” said Newell.

“We had to bat better in the first innings to reach a big score and put pressure on Surrey, we didn’t do that. When conditions are difficult we need to show more skill and more fight.

“We want to play better, and we want to play better quickly.”

With a number of younger players breaking into Nottinghamshire’s side, Newell emphasised the importance of blooding the likes of Jake Libby and Matt Carter in  tough, competitive game situations. Young pace bowler Ben Kitt is the latest academy graduate to be involved, after being named in Nottinghamshire's squad for the trip to Edgbaston.

“We have had Jake Libby, Brett Hutton, Matt Carter all playing down at the Oval this week, it is a learning experience for them,” said Newell.

“They have to fight really hard in Division One, there is some tough cricket with a lot of international players around.

“I am looking to the senior players to take the lead, and then these youngsters to make a bigger contribution as the season goes on.”

Warwickshire have been a thorn in Nottinghamshire’s side in recent seasons, the Outlaws without a win at Edgbaston since 2010.

“We’ve battled in recent years against Warwickshire, though we had a very good win against them at Trent Bridge last year,” added Newell.

“They’re a very experienced team, much older than we are in many ways and we have to be ready for a good fight because they’re a very good side with skillful players with bat and ball.
