Nottinghamshire fast bowler Jackson Bird has been selected by Australia for their forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

The Tasmania right armer, whose most recent Test appearance saw him collect a five wicket haul against New Zealand, was named in a 15-man party down under overnight.

Bird’s Nottinghamshire commitments are unaffected by his call-up. The 29-year-old’s spell at Trent Bridge concludes following the Specsavers County Championship fixture against Lancashire in early July with the Test Series set to commence three weeks later.

Bird has so far taken 11 wickets in four matches for the Club with a best of 4-56 in the Specsavers County Championship victory over Surrey. He is sitting out the current fixture against Hampshire with a minor injury.

"Jackson Bird and Nathan Coulter-Nile join the squad and will give us good control and pace,” said Australia's selection chair Rod Marsh.

"Jackson had an impressive Sheffield Shield season and showed skill with reverse swing in the last Test match in New Zealand earlier this year.

"He's playing in England at the moment and we're confident this will build his skills to assist the squad."

Peter Siddle, as expected, was not selected as his rehabilitation from ankle surgery continues. Former Outlaw Adam Voges retains his place having sustained a remarkable average of 95.5 in his 15-match Test career to date.

The party will embark on their tour from Monday 11 July and will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and two T20s on the island.

Australia Test squad to face Sri Lanka: Steve Smith, David Warner, Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja, Adam Voges, Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Nathan Lyon Steve O'Keefe.
