Mick Newell has lavished praise upon home grown Nottinghamshire fast bowler Jake Ball ahead of Sunday’s Specsavers County Championship fixture against Middlesex at Lord’s.

The Director of Cricket compared the performances of the Welbeck Wizard favourably with a string of internationals that have graced Trent Bridge in recent times.

“He’s bowling as well as anybody we’ve had here for a number of years,” he said.

“There’s Andre Adams, Stuart Broad, Jackson Bird, Peter Siddle and Vernon Philander, we’ve had some really high quality world-class bowlers here.

“At the moment, you wouldn’t say any of them have outshined what Jake is currently doing.

“Much of the time he looks to be our best bowler. It’s a confidence and a rhythm thing and it’s going his way at the moment.”
